The epic story of Thanvillé Castle: a journey through the centuries
Thanvillé Castle, whose foundation stone was laid in 1089, is a true historical fortress. Built on the salt route by Hugo d'Eguisheim, it has survived numerous upheavals and continues to exist today.
The castle has spanned ten centuries, changing hands many times and undergoing significant transformations. Notably under the direction of Jean-Friedrich de Worms in the 16th century and Marie-Agnès de Coqfontaine in the 17th century, who rebuilt the manor after the Thirty Years' War.
In the 19th century, the Castex family, heirs to the Dartein line, took over the château, with Théodore de Castex enlarging and modernizing it. The conflicts of the 20th century left the château in poor condition, requiring extensive restoration.
In 1982, the Wagner family undertook the task of reviving the castle, transforming it into a superb venue for events and celebrations.
Since 2004, the AOC association has been committed to preserving the castle and its heritage.
In 2023, the association also took over the Lilaveronica garden, installing an exhibition on biodiversity there.
Today, Thanvillé Castle is not only a silent witness to regional history, but also a dynamic site open to all those who wish to discover it.

The AOC association: protector of heritage
Since its creation in 2004, the Association for the Preservation of Thanvillé Castle (AOC) has been working to preserve and enhance the site. Thanks to the commitment of its volunteers, numerous renovations have been carried out, such as the restoration of the Calvary on Rue de l'Église, the renovation of the church wall, and the management of the Lilaveronica garden.
The Lilaveronica garden and the "Biodiversity in the Open Air" exhibition
In 2023, the AOC took over the management of the Lilaveronica garden, incorporating a large-format photo exhibition on biodiversity. This initiative aims to raise public awareness of the protection of our natural heritage.
The garden and the exhibition are open for self-guided visits on Sundays in May, June, July, August, September and October from 14:00 pm to 18:00 pm, and on Thursdays in July and August also from 14:00 pm to 18:00 pm.
Historical tours
Tours take place at 5 rue du Château de Thanvillé. Organized by the AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée), they offer a fascinating glimpse into over 10 centuries of history. The price is €5 per person and free for children. The château is open every Sunday from May to August at 16:00 PM, as well as on Thursdays in July and August by reservation.
