Every year, October is adorned in pink for a cause of vital importance: the fight against breast cancer. Known as Pink October, this awareness campaign aims to inform the public about the dangers of breast cancer and encourage early detection.
Origins of Pink October
Pink October is an annual breast cancer awareness campaign, established in 1985 in the United States.
The campaign first appeared in France in 1994, thanks to the initiative of Marie Claire magazine and the Estée Lauder group. This collaboration led to the creation of the association "Le Cancer du Sein, Parlons-en!" (Breast Cancer, Let's Talk About It!), which was renamed Ruban Rose (Pink Ribbon) in 2020. Since then, thousands of events have been organized every year to raise public awareness of this cause.
Breast cancer: a public health challenge
Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women, accounting for 33% of all cancers in women. In France, approximately 54,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, and around 12,000 women die from it. This cancer affects approximately 650,000 women in France, with one in eight women likely to develop the disease during her lifetime.
The importance of early screening
The earlier breast cancer is detected, the higher the chances of recovery. In fact, when detected at an early stage, breast cancer is curable in 90% of cases. This underscores the importance of screening.
For women aged 25 and over: Regular gynecological checkups are recommended. Breast self-examination is also a simple yet effective preventative measure.
For women aged 50 to 74: Since 2004, organized screening has been offered every two years. It includes a mammogram and a clinical examination performed by an approved radiologist.
After age 75, there is no further follow-up within the framework of organized screening.
Pink October: A call to action
Pink October is a call to all women to take charge of their health. By participating in this campaign, by informing yourself and encouraging others to get screened.
