We tested it for you: a donkey ride at the Ferme de la Fontaine!

(C)Patrice Bucher 2010

There are experiences that smell of nature, childhood and simple moments shared… and our donkey ride at the Fontaine farm in Fouchy is clearly one of them.

Upon arrival, we received a warm welcome from Clarisse, who immediately put us at ease. With her, you could feel a genuine passion for animals and for sharing that knowledge. Six-year-old Léo was already captivated. For him, Clarisse quickly became "the guardian of the donkeys," a nickname that suited her perfectly.

Even before setting off on our walk, the adventure begins in the meadow. We go to meet Quézac, our companion for the day. This first encounter is a precious moment. We learn to observe, to approach gently, to create a bond. Clarisse takes the opportunity to ask us a quick question: do we know the difference between a donkey, a horse, and a pony? She quickly enlightens us with simple and fun explanations. Léo is particularly struck by the donkey's large, pointed ears and its distinctive tail, with the hair at the end like a little paintbrush.

Next comes the preparation time. Brushing Quézac, checking for injuries, examining his hooves… all these actions help us appreciate the importance of caring for the animal. This calming moment is an integral part of the experience. We don't simply ride a donkey; we learn to know and respect it.

Once we were ready in Quézac, Clarisse gave us a map and a travel guide. She took the time to explain the two possible routes, each taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. We chose the "Promenade des Sources" (Springs Walk), drawn by its panoramic views of the village of Fouchy and the valley. The description alone made us want to go.

Before setting off, a few instructions are essential. The leader's role is clearly explained: always position yourself on the left, maintain a certain distance, and know how to be authoritative while remaining kind. Clarisse also shows us how to react if Quézac decides to stop for a snack, how to encourage him to keep going, and how to stop gently. Invaluable advice that provides reassurance for a first-time experience.

And then, the long-awaited moment arrives. We set off on our adventure. Clarisse accompanies us for the first few meters of the trail, then leaves us to explore on our own. Very quickly, the tranquility of the forest envelops us. The starting point is right from the farm, on well-maintained, accessible, and pleasant paths.

The walk is a real breath of fresh air. Throughout the route, the guidebook becomes a companion for discovery. It contains explanations about the different tree species, with photos to help identify leaves and shapes. Leo enjoys comparing, searching, and learning without even realizing it.

The donkey's leisurely pace invites you to slow down. You take the time to observe, listen, and enjoy. Several breaks are possible, notably at the viewpoint, perfect for a snack with a view, or a little further on in the forest, in the shade of the trees. The route continues along a botanical path, over a small wooden bridge, and past viewpoints that unfold as you walk. At each turn, a new perspective of the valley or the village of Fouchy presents itself.

What stands out most, beyond the natural setting, is the authenticity of the experience. The children quickly find their place, experiencing a mix of wonder and responsibility. Léo, for his part, leaves with his head full of memories… and a great sense of pride at having “guided” Quézac.

Beyond the walk itself, this time spent with the donkey provides a true sense of peace. Quézac, with its gentleness and tranquil pace, naturally invites you to slow down and let go. Children feel safe and soothed by this direct contact with the animal, while adults rediscover the simple pleasure of being fully present in the moment. Here, there is no rush or distractions, just nature, the calm of the forest, and the donkey's steady gait. A true escape from everyday life and a chance to reconnect with what truly matters.

An ideal activity for families with young children, combining discovery, nature, and a special bond with animals. A timeless escape to be fully experienced and savored.
